Botanical Art Classes For Intermediate Level Students

The courses in this section are designed for students who have basic watercolor painting skills and want to move forward to develop more complex compositions with elaborate painting skills. 5 projects will be offered along the year with focuses on watercolor techniques with selected plant specimens available in the regions. Students will choose the same or similar plant specimens to apply the techniques the instructor demonstrates through the classes. All classes via Zoom, Saturdays, 10 am - 1 pm, CT. Intermediate Watercolor, Saturdays

Project 1: Feb 11, 18, 25, Mar 4

Fine Details in Pine Branches, Cones & Chickadees

Focusing on layered needle leaves, pine cone details, and a delightful little bird, Chickadees that enjoy the seeds between the cone scales. Alternative regional tree species (fir, spruce, larch etc) are fine. Other small birds in similar colors will be fine, too.

Project 2: April 1, 8, 15 & 22

Roots and Sprouts (bulbs, corms, tap roots….. )

With early spring bulbs, such as tulip, amaryllis or Jack-in-the-Pulpit, if one can get one (students will choose what are available to them), this project will be focused on surface textures/details, form building, edge treatment, rich & colorful darks, and transition of light/shadow/colors without being distracted by flowers and leaves.

Project 3: June 3, 10, 17 & 24

Blues Flowers and Dragonflies

From late May Blue flag Iris and/or Siberian iris bloom in wild and gardens. A little later Spiderwort will show off gorgeous blues. Weedy Day Flowers are similar in colors. In this project we will paint locally available blue flowers with parallel venation pattern. We will add dragonflies (student’s choice) which share habitats with these blue flowers.

In 2023 different plant subjects will be selected, but students can expect similar level of complexity and quality of the instruction.
